In the past, heathlands covered vast areas, but today only small fragments remain. One of those remnants is Vloethemveld, whose dozens of hectares of heath still provide a habitat for many rare animal and plant species.
The former layout of the ammunition depot at Vloethemveld, with its many protective embankments (or merlons) surrounding the storage bunkers, contributed to the development of this unique heathland biotope with common heather, cross-leaved heath, and bell heather. These sandy, nutrient-poor banks are also home to species such as antlion, digger wasp, and viviparous lizard.
Would you like to join our guide for a walk through Vloethemveld to learn more about the history of heathlands, the animals and plants that still live here today, and the management needed to protect these areas?
